HAGERSTOWN, Md. – October 11, 2023 – The Maryland Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to invite families to a captivating and interactive storytime event, where the worlds of literature and orchestral music come together in perfect harmony. Join us on Friday, October 20th, at 11:30 AM at the Washington County Free Library in downtown Hagerstown for an engaging experience like no other.
This month, we are delving into the heartwarming pages of Mo Willems’ beloved children’s book, “Because.” With captivating storytelling and whimsical illustrations, this tale explores the magic of cause and effect, taking young readers on an unforgettable journey.
But that’s not all! Our special guest, Maryland Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Conductor, Elizabeth Schulze, will bring the story to life through her reading. After the story, she’ll invite young attendees to step into the conductor’s shoes and learn how to lead an orchestra like a pro! It’s a hands-on experience that promises to inspire the next generation of music enthusiasts.
This unique program is a partnership between the Washington County Free Library and the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, generously supported by the Washington County Arts Council. Designed for children in Pre-K and Kindergarten, it promises a day of discovery, music, and storytelling that will leave a lasting impression.

About the Book: “Because” by Mo Willems is a heartwarming children’s book that masterfully explores the interconnectedness of life. Through captivating storytelling and whimsical illustrations, it follows the journey of a young girl named Trixie and her beloved stuffed bunny, Knuffle Bunny. When Trixie accidentally drops her binky (pacifier) on the sidewalk, it sets off a chain reaction of events that leads to a heartwarming and unexpected conclusion, highlighting the power of small actions and the beautiful, often unpredictable, reasons behind the things that happen in life. “Because” is a delightful tale that encourages children to see the magic in everyday moments and to appreciate the wonder of cause and effect.
